In the heart of Soweto, a new forest is taking root. Set against the backdrop of the iconic Soweto Towers, the Ithuba Unity Forest is more than just trees — it’s a symbol of healing, growth, and opportunity.
Planted within the grounds of Bona Comprehensive School, the forest will serve as a hands-on learning space where students can engage with nature, science, and sustainability. It’s a living classroom that encourages curiosity, creativity, and care for the environment. Beyond education, it will also be a space for empowerment, offering after-school programs that support women and girls in developing leadership and life skills.
The forest represents a collaboration between two of Johannesburg’s most historic communities — Alexandra and Soweto. From this shared vision, Ithuba Unity Forest was born. “Ithuba” means “opportunity,” and that’s what this space is designed to create: opportunities for people to connect, learn, and lead.

This green space will also boost local biodiversity and offer a place for cultural gatherings, reflection, and celebration. Every tree planted is a symbol: of girls who lead, of communities coming together, and of a city investing in a more inclusive, sustainable future. Rooted in the spirit of Ubuntu — “I am because we are” — the Ithuba Unity Forest connects people, place, and purpose. It’s a gift to the next generation and a commitment to building a greener, stronger Johannesburg.

The school choir performed on planting day while we celebrated not only Heritage Day but also Johannesburg's first Climate week, celebrating the diversity of South Africa, and Sibusile Xaba also gave a unique performance.
